Shepperton Studios

Shepperton Studios - Building on the Past, Investing in the Future.

peterThis was the snappy title of a talk by Peter Hicks from the Pinewood Studios Group on the studios in Shepperton. He started off with the early days and rapidly progressed through the early use of sound which replaced the silent movies, to the creation of the modern studios. this interesting presentation took us up to the war years where our local historian, Nick Pollard took over.

nickNick covered the use of the studios by the government to use mdels and mockups to divert the German bombers away from our towns and airfields. This was so successful that one night, one make believe location complained they were being attacked.

talkPeter Hicks then took over again and spoke on the future and the way the Pinewood Group was developing both in the UK and overseas. They clearly have an interesting future.

ruthThe whole event was chaired by our own David Catt-Camfield who also hosted the Question and Answer session with Ruth Wilson, the daughter of one of our members, who is a well known actress. She ably answered a range of question on her career and her aspirations for the future.

exhibitsNot only was there the lecture, those lucky enough to have got tickets - we seated 300 but had a long waiting list for returned tickets - had an opportunity to see an exhibition of the work of Aurora, The Local History Society and the studios Model Maker while having a complimentary glass of wine in the marquee that Shepperton Aurora Rotary had erected for the evening. The whole club was involved in the event which raised a large sum for the Riverside Youth Theatre in Sunbury where Ruth Wilson started her career.

groupThe event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Spelthorne and also by our District Governor, Ron Daniels, who, together with our President, Doreen, are pictured with the BAFTA award given to Pinewood Studios for their work in the cinema industry.

We are also grateful to the Headmaster and Governors of Halliford School for allowing us to use their magnificent theatre.

Our pictures show some of the highlights of the evening. The pictures of the group, Ruth Wilson and Peter Hicks at the top are by Karen Sutton of
